There is one drink above all that makes you think of Christmas and winter time, Mulled Wine. I first had this drink years ago when I went skiing for the first time to Austria. In every bar we went to had a jug full of warm Glue-wine. After a days skiing this quickly became the treat we’d look forward to all day. After that experience I’d look forward to Christmas time and the mulled wine, but since giving up drinking I had to look for other recipes and found one that meant I could still enjoy the flavour, but without all the alcohol that goes into it.
I simply substituted the red wine for a blackcurrant drink. In the UK the best blackcurrant drink is Ribena. The recipe below worked really well, but to make a simple mulled wine drink, simply shake cinnamon powder onto the top of the drink and pour on boiling water. - One peeled and sliced orange (keep peel to add zest to taste into cooking pot)
- 8-10 cloves
- 2/3 cup honey
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 1 tsp fresh or 2 tsp ground ginger (allspice can be substituted)
- Use Ribena or any blackcurrant drink in place of the wine..! (Add enough to taste…don’t use the whole bottle!)
- Add about 2 litres of boiling water to the pot
